I've always understood the poet as someone preoccupied with both the present moment and certain death. They measure their experiences in culture against some internal standard or compass. In the face of beauty, they revel. And when injustice has been done in the world, they cry out against it. They observe the fragile state of mortality and help the world around them to come to terms with their own brokenness and eventual death. The poet is here for you and I.
